Ansley West Fine Art and Commercial Photographer - Food Consumption in America - Blackbirds
Throughout history, food preparation and consumption have been connected through both ceremonial and everyday customs. However, in our current culture of fast food and disposable containers, we give less time to cooking, presenting and eating meals. We as consumers, are rarely aware where the food we buy or eat is grown or processed, which has created a disconnect from the source of our sustenance. We have so far removed ourselves from the process of growing food and regularly sharing meals in communion with others that eating is something we often do to survive and get through our days. This distorted relationship with food may also contribute to the severe eating disorders that plague many Americans including bulimia and anorexia as well as gorging obesity.
These photographs were created in collaboration with another artist who created a series of ceramic vessels in order to bring awareness and hope for reconnecting with the food we consume.
