Her Series

“Her Series” addresses the life of a Schizophrenic. I created this series because of my experience with family and friends with mental illnesses as well as working in a mental health facility for several years. The images that I have created depict the thoughts and events in the life of a character I have invented, who has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia at the age of twenty-one (the average age of onset).

Mental Illnesses such as Schizophrenia have often been misunderstood as a sign of weakness of character and not widely recognized as medical conditions, creating a cycle of isolation and rejection of those labeled as “insane” or “crazy.”

These photographs are my effort to relate to what my character and, ultimately, people in my own life, may experience. My hope is that these photographs help to raise awareness about mental illnesses and lessen the stigma associated with them.
