Superstitions

A superstition is “an irrational belief that an object, action, or circumstance not logically related to a course of events influences its outcome.” Superstitions though irrational and antiquated still affect people everyday. They are interesting thoughts that still plagues the minds of many people though they may not even know where the superstition originated. I have come up with 23 different superstitions. I chose 23 because like 13 it’s sometimes considered unlucky. Conspiracy theories and secret societies like the Illuminatus use the number 23 to explain certain happenings. I have photographed each superstition by setting up a scene that depicts each irrational belief using a Polaroid camera. Polaroid’s are instant multiples that harbor their own mystery. This is a confrontation of all our silly superstitions. The 23 superstitions are:

1. Walking Under a Ladder
2. Pick a dandelion that has gone to seed. Take a deep breath and blow the seeds into the wind and make a wish. If you blow all the seeds off your wish will come true.
3. Broken Mirror means bad luck for seven years
4. Spilling Salt is bad luck unless you throw it over your right shoulder
5. Spitting in your Hat when you see a White Cow
6. Holding your breath while you pass a graveyard
7. It is lucky for a woman to be on board a boat
8. Pulling out a gray or white hair will cause ten more to grow in its place.
9. A dog eating grass brings rain
10. 3 butterflies together is bad luck
11. Touch blue and your wish will come true
12. A white horse brings good fortune
13. Getting out of bed with the left foot first
14. Opening an umbrella indoors
15. Bad luck to give a pair of gloves to a friend unless you receive something in return
16. If the groom drops the ring during the wedding the marriage will fail
17. If you want to see a friend again do not say goodbye on a bridge
18. Finding a horseshoe brings good luck
19. Hair cut off should be burned
20. An apple a day keeps the doctor away
21. Step on a crack, break your mothers back
22. If you blow out all of the candles on your birthday cake with the first breath you will get whatever you wish for
23. Crossed Knives bring bad luck
